Reckon

There is a word I use a fair bit and I saw it in a sentence.  So I thought I would look it up.  The word is “reckon”
It is not something that is used a lot these days but it is still used occasionally.  I reckon very occasionally.  Vocabulary.com says “If reckon sounds odd, that’s because it's mostly gone out of style.”  It goes on to say that in the US it is mostly used by rural types.
Vocabulary.com gives six definitions of Reckon. 1. Expect, believe or suppose 2. Deem to be (as in consider) 3. Judge to be probable 4. Have confidence in 5. Take account of 6. Make a mathematical calculation or computation.  Some of the definitions to me are interchangeable.  For example judge to be probable, have faith or confidence in and make a mathematical calculation all have the synonym “calculate”.
That is the sense I tend to use it in a sentence.  What I am saying when I use the word “reckon” is I have done at least a rough calculation and sometimes a precise one and determined something is in a particular way.  I am confident that if another investigates the matter there is a good chance they will come to a similar conclusion.
I do like the word “reckon.”  To me it does not have a sense of dogmatism.  It says I have found it to be this way.  It seems to very much say this is the way I have found it but if another wants to investigate and perhaps comes to a different conclusion that is for them.
I am very much against telling another how to live.  I hold to things for sure but as a song I love says, “Every man has his belief, his own point of view, on everything from big to small.  Some of them we must defend with everything we’ve got.  Some of them don’t matter much at all.
I will stand for what I hold to and explain why if asked, but I reckon some things don’t matter much at all.  I may agree or disagree with something someone holds to.  That can vary.  What never varies though is my care for the person.
