I have a friend who plays a mean fiddle. She plays bluegrass. She was ranked in the top three blue grass fiddle players in the US.
Anyway we were fishing at Lake Kurwongbah and I thought to learn to play bluegrass I needed to write a song. I played it with a bluegrass band. I told one of them that if I was going down they were coming with me. They were all really good, and it was an honour to play with them.
These are the words of the song.
Kookaburras’ Laughing
Kookaburras’ laughing, up in yonder tree
I can’t help but wonder, do they laugh at me
I just sit here fishing, with nere a single bite
Kookaburras’ laughing with delight
A little while later I think I feel a tug
I begin to fight that fish, fall face down in mud
Kookaburra’s laughter, reaches grand new heights
Kookaburra’s laughing in delight
Now those birds are on my nerve’s I walk up to their tree
I tell them to “get a life” and ask “why pick on me?”
There’s a moments silence, they’re thinking I can tell
Then they all laughed so hard out of their tree they fell
Right that’s it I’m leaving, so I pack the truck
I begin to spin the wheels, but that truck is stuck
Then a strange thing happens, I give up the fight
And join Kookaburras’ laughing with delight.

Alliteration was the goal. We had choices for the first line. I chose “Quickly, quickly, quickly.” This was the result.
Quickly, quickly, quickly
Quickly, quickly, quickly, the pig is out of the sty
Famer follows franticly, but Porky Pig is sly
Through the gurgling gully, past the bushes beyond
Racing recklessly onwards, straight into the pond
Porky Pig cannot swim, nor can farmer Fred
A rider rescues both of them and sends them both to bed!

I felt a song coming on. Well I had a tune anyway. The daughter of a friend of mine and I got to writing words. We put a play to it and got the people we needed to do the props. We named all the characters after people we knew would be there. Another friend of mine did drawings. We had everyone sing the chorus which went “A nungga nungga nungga nungga nungga nung nung
A nungga nungga nungga nungga nungga nung ga” This was the song.
Crows Song
I saw a crow up in a tree,
And he was staring back at me.
He started to scratch cause he had a flea
And he said “I know where I got it, it was the monkey!”
He then took off and left the ground
His wings they flapped, they made no sound
He flew over a mountain, a lake, and a town
Then he thought “hang on a minute, I’m lost and I’ll never be found!
He then got scarred and he started to cry
He wished he was home eating apple pie
His wings got tired and he couldn’t fly
And he started to spiral and thought “I’m gonna die”
He thought “what was it my momma would say?”
“Son when you’re in trouble remember to pray”
He cried “Lord save me!” and straight away
His prayer was answered dramatically – he landed in hay
So what’s the lesson we learn from this song
Talk to God it needn’t be long
When you are weak, He’ll make you strong
And remember, before you take off anywhere in a big hurry, ask God along.
