You can keep your jack

It was just a story, but I was reminded of it by something someone said yesterday.
A guy had hired a car and was traveling to another town late at night, when it got a flat.  It was then he discovered he had no jack.  In the distance he could see a porch light on a farmhouse.  Although it was 2am he knew he probably could get a jack there.
So he set off to walk to get it.  On the way he started to think.  It is late.  The guy probably will not even open the door with a stranger knocking on it at this hour.  Further on the road the thought, “everyone is no doubt in bed and have settled for the night.  The last thing they need is a disruption caused by someone knocking on the door.”  As he approached the house he thought “they all probably have a big day ahead.  They will no doubt be getting up early and the sleep they get now is really important for the day ahead.”  When he finally knocked on the door it was opened and he blurted out, “you can keep your jack!”
The whole point was he talked himself out of getting the thing he needed.  Not because someone had said no, but because he convinced himself they would say no.
What made me remember that was someone saying “don’t hear what I’m not saying.”
It seems to go with the territory that everyone is rejected to some extent.  No one is liked by all.  Even for myself I know there are some I do not take to.  It is not that I treat them bad, it is just that they are not my type.
The point for me is that no matter if the rejection is real or imagined (like in the story), it can have devastating effects.  From what I see it is something on the increase today.  Social media is notorious as being a platform for pulling down.  So many it seems derive their sense of self-worth, or the lack of it, from that medium.
For me it is about whether I am going to believe a truth or a lie.  A lie says I am worthless while the truth says I may need work, but I am important, and contrary to the opinion of some a “waste of space.”
For me self-worth is based on the opinion of the one who put me together.  I know some need professional help and to work though the negativity of a lifetime, but for me it is a case of dismissing voices that pull me down, and accepting the voice that sees me as worthwhile and will work with me to realise all I am and can be.
