Would I Lie to You?

I look forward to Thursdays.  It is my day off.  I still do stuff but do not make appointment.  In the evening I watch a bit of tele.  Two shows I really like are on Thursday night on Foxtel.  Both are English shows.  My favourite of them is, “Would I lie to you?”  It features a compare and 6 comedians.  One tells a story, and the other team needs to determine if it is true or not.
In the light of what is happening I have also thought of “The Chronicles of Narnia”, “The Loin, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.”
In that story kids in England during World War 2 are sent to the country.  Older ones called Peter and Susan along with relatives Lucy and Edmund are sent to a professor’s house.   Edmund is not a nice kid.  He ends up in Narnia and meets the witch who gives him Turkish Delight which he loves and tells him if he brings back the other young ones he will get more.
But because he is not a nice kid when Lucy claims to have unexpectedly visited Narnia though the back of a cupboard, he denies its existence and makes out Lucy (who is younger than him) is crazy.
The kids face a real dilemma.  Lucy is given to telling the truth while Edmund is more inclined to lie.  Thinking perhaps even Lucy has gone mad they take their dilemma to the professor.  What he says totally surprises them.
“How do you know” he asks, “your sister’s story is not true?”  He then asks who in their experience is more likely to tell the truth.  They reply that that is the thing.  Both agree it is Lucy.  He wonders aloud why logic is not taught in schools and then says there are only three possibilities.  Either she is lying, she is mad or she is telling the truth.  He then states that she is not given to lying and obviously not mad.
The kids were not expecting that.  Things improved for the kids after that, and they all eventually end up in Narnia.
I read that story decades ago and have made it one of the principles I live by.  It seems things are not always as they seem.  I feel better reserving judgement until I have facts from all sides.  I examine the predispositions of those involved also.  I am amazed at how sometimes things come into play I had not considered which affect my view of the world.
