Worry

I never cease to be flabbergasted (never written that word before that I know of).  I wrote this yesterday and the first song that came up on a random play list and from an album I had never heard of contained the words, “The weight of worry is never worth the price.”
I found myself worrying before about something I have no control over.  I thought “what a waste of time that is.”  It sent me looking up the definition of worry.  It said “give way to anxiety or unease; allow one's mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles.”
There are a couple of keys in that definition that ring a bell with me. “Give way to.”  I so believe it is a choice.  Something that gives way caves in to, it results from yielding to pressure.  I chose not to say that it results from caving into a greater pressure.  To me the pressure is often weak and able to be withstood.  But to worry is to aid and abet the reason for the pressure.  It is caving in when I do not need to.  The pressure can be great, but it is never too great. Going there is a fact of life.  Staying there is a choice.
The other phrase that rings a bell is “allow one’s mind to.”  This says pretty much the same thing, but it highlights better to me the choice that is to worry.  I think concern does something, but worry is always unfruitful.    When someone is late home without explanation it is always natural to be concerned.  Phone calls are made, and if necessary, so are trips.  But worry to me is to “allow one’s mind to” dwell on a worst-case scenario.  It is playing a tape in my mind of unproven things.
I could say that seeing concern caused concern, but it did not.  I just did not agree with what I read.  The definition has a lot of synonyms.  One was concern.  It amazes me how different minds work.  I would not list that as a synonym.  Vexing, harassing, harrying I could agree with but not concerning.
So I looked up concern.  There were a number of definitions but the one I gravitated to was a noun “a matter of interest or importance to someone.” I reckon concern is positive and worry is negative.  If someone is late without explanation concern to me is pro-active.  It makes phone calls and takes trips if necessary.  Worry to me imagines the worst and acts like it is a known reality.
It seems to me that for many words there is an opposite.  The opposite if good is bad, the opposite if love is hate, the opposite of fruitful is barren.  I reckon the opposite of worry is trust.  The worst-case scenario may turn out to be the reality, but the worry did nobody any good.  In fact, some may argue (while others think it is ridiculous and I would too except I have seen it when I was not looking for it) that the worry contributed to the bad outcome.
Concern to me gets on with it.  It accepts the reality as it is.  I do not need to understand but I reckon I do need to trust.
