Worm Patrol

Worm Patrol
It is raining.  The “worm patrol” team spang into action.  Ok maybe I used the word team a little loosely.  Unless a team can consist of one.  I don’t think so though.  Anyway, I sprang into action as a founding member of the “worm patrol” team.
I wonder about those worms.  I think they are oblivious to the danger they are in.  When it rains, they make their way onto cement.  Here it can be the shed area, the carport area or the area I type at out the side of the place.
If I am not around some of them do not make it.  I find their shriveled up carcasses on the cement.  They thought they were heading to greener pastures (though things could hardly be greener than right now).  But alas, their journey leads them only to a place where they cannot dig into.
I am yet to see a worm dig into the cement.  If they did though that would be like “super worm” and we could tour together and I reckon I could make a lot of money out of him.  I mean, science would prosper and be enthralled.
So I sit and look around and behold a worm and behold another worm and behold still another.  Enough of the behold already.  When I see them, I feel obliged to rescue them.  But not a word of thanks.  None comes back to say “I was in mortal danger and thanks to you I live.”  Nope, not a word.  I really do not know if I am appreciated.  I rescue them and they almost seem to resent it.  They act like they are being captured by an evil tyrant who’s intent is to lock them away.  They just go about singing, "Worms just wanna have fun."
Nothing could be further from the truth.  I would actually be happy if I never saw them again.  Them underground doing what worms do.  But no, they gotta surface and draw attention to themselves.  I mind my own business only to have my attention drawn to a worm making its way at pace across the carpeted cement.
Well I can only assume it is at pace.  They could be going on a leisurely stroll for all I know but the speed at which they emerge suggests to me they are acting like they have places to go, others to see, things to do.
Worm things.  Secret business.  I don’t mind really.  Just not where I come to rescue you please.
