World Cup

27/1/2018

It has been a while since the Rugby Union world cup was here.  We attended one match and had the time of our lives.  The good thing about it was tickets were cheap enough just to go and enjoy yourself.
I’ll never forget how in Tasmania the mayor of the town where a game was being played said if you are born on an odd day go and support this team and born on an even day support that team.  I remember hearing guys singing “I am, you are, we are Rumanian.”
The match we saw was the USA vs Scotland.  We did not really mind who won but we had the gear to support Scotland.  Merril loaned me a kilt.  As the game was after work I got ready at work.  I wore shorts and the kilt over my shorts.  My mobile phone was in my shorts.
Unfortunately a guy at work knew this, so he waited and rang me when I was in the middle of Brisbane town.  I had no idea who was ringing but felt obliged to answer.  How to answer without lifting my kilt?  I hit on the idea that I could go into a public toilet to answer.  I had no idea of where they were so I raced here and there.  All the while the persistent phone rang.  Finally I found a loo and raced to answer.  Unbeknown to me the toilet was occupied by someone who had not locked the door.  I raced into the toilet area and burst open the toilet door only to discover it was occupied.   I am sure the occupant was not expecting that.
Did I get sympathy from the guy calling?  Put it this way, he said he all but fell off his chair in mirth when he found out what happened.
Actually I was a little envious of him.  He occupied a large sound proof room with desks.  It was sound proof as we used to have a machine in there to count money.  He was right into music and could play it really loud with us only hearing it faintly.  I really liked what he played.
I met those I was going with at the train station.  While there, some genuinely Scottish people saw us and came up and started talking to us.  Fairdinkum none of us knew what the person was saying.  However we stood there looking like we did.
When there, my face was painted in the national Scottish colours and I bought a world cup tee shirt.
For the record I think Scotland won.  The crowd was so good natured.  I remember the friendly banter as we left the ground.  We had a really good time.
