Work Fit

Fitness is a weird thing. I used to pride myself on being work fit.  In other words I was fit enough for the task I did.  I would sit at a desk and crunch numbers.  I was ok for that.  It did not mean I was ok for other things and my general health and well being was good.  It just meant I was ok for that.
Ask me to dig ditches and I was not fit for that.  I could be really good for a brief time and then I was cactus.  I would huff and puff but there was no way I could blow a house down.  I was too busy sucking them in.
I had a job for a while that took it out of me.  I will never forget because it has never happened before of since.  At the end of it I lay across my bed with my boots still on and promptly went to sleep.  I was gone.  There is a good side to that though.  The more it is done the easier it gets.
I do reckon it is important to be work fit.  It does not matter if my role is to crunch numbers or dig ditches.  I want to be the man for the job.
I find it too easy to despair when I assume a task and it is too much for me.  The assumption is it will always be that way.  But to me that is wrong.  It may be that way initially but when I know I am the man for the job it may take working at, but I am up for it.
Learning for me is a necessary part of life.  In a role I used to have we had a sponsor and I let them down inadvertently.  I remember writing to them and apologising and saying if I do it once that is ignorance but if I do it twice that is negligence.  Our relationship remained fine (boy fine not girl fine).
Maybe initially I am not up to the task but that is not the end of the story.  Little by little I can gain the strength needed.  For me that is not guaranteed if it is something that is not for me to do.  This seems to me to be especially true the older one gets.  I heard someone say recently they used to do everything and now they do what they are meant to do.
It is no wonder we say, “if you want a job done properly you’ve got to do it yourself.”  Sometimes that is true but mostly it is not.  There are heaps of people that care.  They are job fit.
I have the feeling of late that if I do something I can be standing in the way of someone who is made for the job.  To me it is robbery.  They need their chance.  They will make mistakes but they care and potentially can take it further than I ever could.
