Wonder

I guess I am a sucker for a happy ending.  I’m also a sucker for a happy ending to a story with a good plot.  I’m a total sucker for a happy ending to a good plot based on a good story.
I guess you could call me a sucker.  But I would not if I were you.  I have a black belt in macramé.  I’m pretty tough.
Speaking of tough, this tear in my eye is like, always there, and nothing should be made of it.  It is not a good look, when I have trouble convincing myself.  On the other hand, the person I watched Wonder with, lost it.  I prefer she remain anonymous.  There ya go Merril (that’s with a double r and one l).
I love the way he overcame adversity.  The kid was born with a facial deformity.  The other kids used to joke that to even touch him was to invite the plague.  He was not accepted.  Initially.  The whole story is about how he gained acceptance.  At first it was one guy, and then a girl (being a chick magnet is always a good look) Eventually, at school summer camp (which seems to be really big in America) he and his friend had a fight with some grade sevens, and a group came to his aid.  What really touched me was the high fives. Once upon a time that would not have happened (because of the potential for the plague) but it did, because he was accepted.  How he looked, mattered less than who he was.
I hope I do not forget quickly him getting off the bus and racing to his mum and dad to tell them he got in a fight.  There was concern, but I reckon his dad asked what so many would.  “Did you win?”  He got elbowed in the stomach by his wife for that, but it looked to be worth it.
At the end of the school year he received an award.  When getting it he got a standing ovation from his peers.  What he said in dialogue (to us – not the audience) was that at least once in our lives, we should know the feeling of receiving a standing ovation.
I happen to believe that.  Life is tough.  Discouragement seems to be at every turn.  Anyone who is giving it a good go, needs encouragement.  It is probably why I am a bit of a legend in my own mind.  One time I walked into a shop with friends to buy food.  The shop was having trouble with their sound system.  One brief burst of triumphant choral music sounded, and then there was silence.  I informed my friends that normally only I hear that.  I guess the groans tell a story.
I did like that movie.  It was never going to break any box office records, but it told a good story of a person who overcame the odds, just to be accepted as normal.
