Women

Merril and I recently watched a movie called “The Post” (spoiler alert).  It starred Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks.  I admit I did not know much about it but only knew I wanted to see it.
The Post refers to the Washington Post newspaper.  Meryl played the owner of the paper.  She became the owner after her husband had been killed.  Being the owner was a role she never expected and did reluctantly.  She had some really hard decisions to make but it turned out well.
What really struck me was how she was a woman in a man’s world.  On a couple of occasions she entered meetings where there were men everywhere and she was the only woman.
There is so much I do not understand, but the assumption seemed to be that being a woman made her inferior somehow.  Honestly I just don’t get it.
So often we see woman are paid less of doing the same job.  That blows me away.  I would have thought that someone doing the same thing should get the same.  Surely it is what is done that matters, and not gender.
I remember seeing a Hagar the Horrible cartoon that showed he and Eddie among ruins and Hagar saying as if it were a bad thing, “Imagine if women ran this.”  I don’t believe that if women ran the world it would necessarily be better (because everyone is fallible) but it would be different.
Physically men are stronger than women but that that does not make them better.   Don’t tell any women I said this, but so often they are the bright one in the room.
I do like watching women’s sport because I can follow what is happening.  Sometimes watching the same in men’s sport (which I love watching), I need to ask “what just happened?”
I don’t believe though, whether it be a man or woman that failure should be rewarded.  So often we see heads of corporations being paid a gazillion dollars and receiving bonuses after sending folk to the wall.  It is not something most would expect and rightly so.  I can only think that greed is the motivation rather than doing the right thing.
Maybe I am missing something, but I believe that when someone works just as hard to achieve something, they should be rewarded the same, despite gender.
