Whelmed
I have asked it before but today curiosity got the better of me.  I wondered why someone is always “overwhelmed.”  I never hear someone say they feel a little whelmed today.  So I thought I would look up “whelm” in the dictionary.  I really did not even know if I would find it.
Turned out I did.   They even gave its usage in a sentence.  “A simmer whelmed in a raging storm.”  That made sense given the meaning and origin of whelmed.  “To cover with water; submerge.”  These days I only ever hear of overwhelmed which is to “bury or drown beneath a huge mass of something, especially water.”  Probably I say “I’m drowning” because of that.
One thing I have found though that it is easy to be overwhelmed let alone whelmed.  Stuff happens.  Lots of stuff.  Things for me tend not to come in isolation but all at once.  I am like a juggler with many balls in the air.
I know I sort of ask for it.  I tend to like to put a pile of things together knowing that if I do chances are I will have a block of time off.  The time off part does not always happen, but I do feel that putting stuff together gives me more time for other stuff if that makes sense.
But there does come a time I need to walk away.  I need to get rest.  I need to put aside what I am intimately involved in and love to do and forget it.  Only for a while, but I find that helps my sanity.  The last thing I want to do is become obsessed with something.  Even something good.  Something I know is mine to do.
I just feel I am no good to anyone if I fail to have balance.  That does not mean I don’t hold to somethings strongly, but it does mean I care about others rather than acting as if nothing else matters.
When I fail to maintain the balance I am at least whelmed and often overwhelmed.  It all gets too much.  I lose perspective.  It is incredible to me how simple things often clear the air.  Sometimes walking away and coming back gives me a whole new outlook on something.
I am so often convinced of something only to let it sit on the side burner for a bit and  return to it and find what I was thinking was not all there was.  I am more rationally equipped.  I may have meant well, but without a doubt I can mean well and do better.
Being overwhelmed is not pleasant for me.  I like to be busy, but I always need to be careful I do not have activities get the better of me and overwhelm me.
