What Daya Know?

21/11/2022

I have a standard response to the question “What daya Know?  It is “Lots of things.  What do you want to know?”  That generally throws people and they say things like “who is going to win the 2023 Melbourne Cup?  I politely tell them that is one of the things I don’t know.
It is often said that a little bit of knowledge is dangerous.  I reckon a little bit of incomplete knowledge can be dangerous.  Like I may know that electricity is good for running things.  But if I do not know sticking a fork into a PowerPoint is not a good idea that incomplete knowledge can be really dangerous.  Or as a terrorist training others I may know that explosives are dangerous.   But if I have on a suicide belt and say “watch closely as I am only going to show you this once” not realizing I am about to be blown up, that is dangerous.
To me there are two types of knowledge.  One is random facts that mostly have no real influence on my life except that I may find them interesting.  And knowledge that aids and enhances my survival.
It seems to me those who are really good on quiz shows seem to know a multitude of random facts.  For those that are good at it, it seems to be something that enhances their survival.  Would not work for me though.  I know the occasional fact but I would be more like many contestants on “Hard Quiz.”  I would probably make it onto the round entitled “Battle of the Dummies.”
Like I got a rude shock today.  I confidently stated I was 63 totally believing that.  Then the maths was done from my birthday in 1958 and it was pointed out that I am actually 64 and soon to be 65 (my birthday is January but you would know that and have been saving up for my present).
I put on a brave face but do not know my bottom lip was not quivering.  My knowledge was floored.  I believed something that was just not right as much as I would have liked it to be.  That seems like another type of knowledge.  “Things I think I know but am wrong.”  Oh well.  As long as I am quiet about it no one will even know.
There is stuff I know that I think enhances my survival.  A lot of what I know involves avoidance.  I am thankful I know not to stick my hand into boiling water.  Bad Diabetes victims really need to learn that heaps of blood is because maybe they are not feeling things they once did (my bro. was like that.  Cutting his toenails was fraught)
It does not matter to me if I am stating something trivial or important to life I try to make sure it is right.  I really do like to find out something for myself so I research a matter before stating it.  Well, I try anyway.  Mostly.  Today concerning my age I failed.
Minimal impact really.  It can probably be way more than embarrassing to discover something is untrue that I have held to for a long time.
