Waterflow

I read a quote by a Wendell Berry who wrote “The Unforeseen Wildness.”  It is beautiful writing.  It made me think anew of rivers and waterways.  “To a river, as to any natural force, an obstruction is merely an opportunity. For the river's nature is to flow; ... All things must yield to the impulse of the water in time, if not today then tomorrow or in a thousand years. If its way is obstructed then it goes around the obstruction or under it or over it and, flowing past it, wears it away.”
I guess that means something to me as I am into trying to know what I want and go for it.    What has become clear to me over the year is no one cares about me as much as I do.  Some mean well and do what they can to assist, but only I am inclined to see something through if I have a real desire for it.
I have watched the waterflow here.  Nothing will stop it.  When it accumulates it wants to go somewhere.  I can channel it, and direct it, and make a course for it to flow.  But really that is as good as it gets.  If there is enough of it then although it may be delayed or obstructed for a time, it gets where it goes naturally or where I want it to go.
The place below us was flooding with water coming through our property.  I did a lot of work to direct the water in a way acceptable to all.  I dammed the water coming into our place from the one above us and build barriers and gardens.  I knew when it really rained the water could not be stopped but it could be directed how I wanted it to do.
On the history channel last night we saw a project on how they got water to Beijing.  It was a huge project, but they did it.
Like the waterflow there are things I want, but I do not want them to run amok.  They bring life but uncontained they bring damage.   It is up to me to harness the waterflow and direct it to doing the most good.
