Water

20/4/2022

There seems to have been heaps of rain around here.  We do not normally have water views from where we sit but it is different this time.
The unofficial neighbourhood watch people visited almost the moment we moved in.  It is great they keep an eye on the place.  They were telling us how high the water got.  It was at the second step of a lower place.  It is not that way now, but the place lower has no yard as it is surrounded by water.
Not this place though.  But we can see water from where we sit.  One thing really struck me.  Water attract life.  Normally I sit there and very occasionally see a goanna or a bird or wallaby bounding by (the wallaby bounds by.  The goanna tends to lumber, and the bird flitters) .
This time though I have seen a bird hunting from a tree above the water.  It descended from the tree to pluck a juicy morsel from the water.  I saw two curlews who had just had a bath in the water.  They were preening and drying themselves.
It is probably best I do not go there talking about another curlew I saw.  It was a street directory.  It just never moved.  Merril has seen a white cat.  It was a pipe (all domestic pets are banned on the island).  It too stayed perfectly still.  We are good at seeing things.  We even see stuff that is not there.
Years ago, a pest controller I was employing was spending heaps of time working around drain holes (in the bath, sink, washing basin tub etc).  He told me that creatures need water.  Most times they are seen going to or from water. Plants in the desert often depend on catching dew for their water.  When stranded in the ocean sailors sometimes use a tarp to catch dew.
Water is a must.  We watch the creeks near our place to see there is water for the animals.  When there is a limited amount, birds tend to avail themselves of our birdbath.
They reckon I could go probably a week without food but only three days without water.  No wonder they reckon wars in the future will be fought over water.  Already there are disputes between countries over water supplies.  I am fortunate to have it on tap.  Some people need to go kilometres to find clean water.
I know I need clean water.  Without it I will die.  And it is not a one off.  I need a continues supply I avail myself of, to maintain my health.
