wanting the ball to come to me

There is a term I have been reminded of recently.  I heard it playing cricket, but it seems to me it can relate to a lot of sports.  It is “wanting the ball to come to me.”
I also like what is being called the Bazball concept which to me looks like the “fear of losing is eliminated.”  Sometimes instead of playing a natural game, players go into their shell and losing is more likely.  It should not be a reckless abandon thing but a keeping it natural thing.
I actually find it hard to believe I ever wanted the ball to come to me because the ball is so hard.  Well, that is the way I feel now.  I guess I find it so hard since I have stopped playing.  Just throwing it around it seems hard now but I think my hands have become soft.  Once upon a time, I did not even think about it.
But I do feel like I know what is being talked about.  To me it is like being a part of the team but being a spectator rather than a competitor.  I do remember one game I played where a batter skied the ball and it headed in my direction.  Someone on my team told me that as the ball was heading in my direction they were confident it would be caught.  But they did not know what was going on in my head.
It’s funny that although it was decades ago, I think of it like yesterday.  I really did not want the ball to come my way.  My head was full of doubts about catching it.  I didn’t.  I was not approaching it like “I’ve got this” but rather “I wish it was going to someone else.”
That is not a good look I reckon.  When wanting the ball to come my way I do all I know to do to do it right.  I may drop it, but it is not self-doubt that causes it, rather doing something wrong and forgetting how to do it right.  When self-doubt rules, I am likely to do more wrong and my chances of catching it are diminished.
Applying it beyond cricket I reckon I am more likely to be a liability on a team than an asset when I am just making up the numbers, rather than contributing.  It is not a cocky thing, but a quiet confidence thing that feels applying the way things should be done will lead to a satisfactory conclusion.
I still reckon the ball is hard though.
