Varix

It was just a matter of time. The word my hand fell on in the dictionary I had never heard of. I have seen it in its plural form and now understand where it came from (that was a light bulb moment for me).

The word is Varix. I am being more careful these days. As it turns out, fortunately for me, I lost the last word I picked that I had no idea about. I think my spelling was to blame. When I went to find it, I could not, so I happily moved on. This time I wrote it down so I could not loose it. Though losing it would have made life easier for me.

The definition of Varix is “permanent abnormal dilation of the vein or artery; vein etc thus dilated: each of the ridges across the whorls of a univalve shell.” Say what? Speak English man. That is according to “The Australian Concise Oxford Dictionary” which is the one I use. Though being concise is no help to me. Concise or verbose I had no idea what it was.

No more though. If someone says “varix” then at this point I will know what they are talking about. As I say, the plural of it I have seen. It is varicose. When we say someone has varicose veins it is the plural form of one vein being varix.

My question was rendered invalid. I did still wonder, if something is spelled incorrectly in the dictionary, how would I know? Thinking it may be spelled wrong though proved to be a vain hope. Get it? Vain – vein. Ok, I’m clutching at straws here.

I realized it was not spelled wrong when I googled it. I am against diagnosing based on google. No matter what it says, I’m going to die from it pure and simple. It is good though for gaining insight and information. That was the mission I had chose to accept. I am going to run this by Merril though (not literally – figuratively). She was a nurse, and knows stuff.

I do not have any varicose veins that I know of, but I have seen my share of them. According to a medical dictionary, if it causes blood to run into another vein it should be dealt with, as it could be a sign of severe bleeding. Many are benign though and can be lived with. They are mostly unsightly. I have never heard someone declare “look at me, I’m the lucky one, I have varicose veins.”

That is over 400 words. I still really do not know what I a talking about and no one will suspect that unless I say it. But I am not going to co that. Oh well. Too late.

Anyway the pressures off. The shell thing I like better. Sometimes with photo’s I try to be arty. I did that with shells one time. Now I know what I am looking at when I see those spirals and ridges on a shell. Just do not ask me to use varix in a sentence.
