I enjoy spending time in the garden.  I guess what is being done here is an acquired taste, but we are getting there.
I did make a path behind our garden at the back of the house, so I could get to all of it without traipsing through garden beds.  The plan was to regularly blower vac the leaves off the path.  That was the plan.  I guess a leaf covered path has its own charm.
What I have noticed though, is sometimes I am at the back of the garden, and see a flower blooming.  It is no less spectacular than what is in plain sight, but unless the place is visited, no-one would ever even know it was there.  That of course does not stop it from doing its thing.  I guess what is inside anything will come out.
I sort of relate it to what I am reading about Tolkien in the Great War at the moment.  He was one of many.  We hear the numbers that lost their lives through that and the Spanish flu, and they are in the millions.  What is easy for me to forget, is that those numbers represent individuals.  They all got up in the morning not knowing that would be their last day on earth.  Sounds morbid but it gets better.  Well I hope it does, but I won’t know until the end.   There is a good chance they would have got up, and got dressed, had some breaky, talked with those around them, and in going over the top, their number was up.
A lot of the scenes in “Lord of the Rings” had their genesis in Tolkien’s experience on the front line.  In the battle scenes there are literally thousands.  Granted, in movies those sort of things are generally digital images, but they represent individual combatants.
What is so easy for me to forget, is each person has their own hopes, aspirations and dreams.  They have a history to that point.  Most are loved and cherished, and have others longing for their return.
In the movie American Beauty, there is a dialogue at the start where the guy says something like “most people when they get up in the morning, don’t realize it is their last day on earth.”
How does this relate to what I see in the garden?  I am one of many.  My role might be in a far flung corner, and be an infinitesimal part of a big picture.  My role may not be seen, except in the general statics.  That does not mean that what I do does not matter.  If I, and everyone around me thought that, then we would be overwhelmed easily.
My role may be small, but it matters.  Even if it is in a hidden corner, I influence those around me, for better or for worse (sounds like a marriage ceremony). I personally want my influence to be for better.re to edit.
