Unproven

I have seen the movie “The Ghost and the Darkness” a couple of times.  I really enjoyed it.  It was very suspenseful.  It was based on a true story from Africa.  People were building a railway line and it was behind schedule.  A renowned engineer is called in and discovers lions are killing the workers.  These lions are expert killers and incredibly elusive (spoiler alert).  The lions are got in the end, but not until the demise of several main characters.
The engineer played by Val Kilmer goes on a hunting expedition and is loaned a gun.  He has an absolute clear shot, but the gun fails.  It is what is said to him that has stuck with me. “You used an unproved weapon?”
Why it stuck with me is it is something I have seen time and again and experienced (not the hunting lions thing.)
But what I have experienced is setting something up and being satisfied it works and then someone well meaning makes a change and things go wrong and I am powerless.  What is done is more than likely a better way to go, but until it is tested and seen to work in the current situation it should not be applied.
I prefer to go with what I know, then to go with something unproven.  It may relegate me to cave man status, but it has been proved to work.  Nothing exposes me more than unfounded trust.
Even when I think all is ok things happen.  The best laid plans and all.  I can handle that.  I do not like it.  I can feel pretty silly, but the buck stops with me.  When I have proven something, it is easier to wear than when something has been inserted and I have accepted it and matters go awry.
One time I had planned a major activity, and someone had agreed to help.  It was only when we discussed it just before we started that I found out their plans were completely different to mine.  Another time I was in too much of a hurry and said something needed to be done.  It was done but completely differently to the way I saw it and I was not happy with the end product (though I am not someone to pull down when it is my fault, and I am thankful for the willingness in the first place).
Often it is said “I’m too busy to do such and such.”  My contention is I am too busy not to pass on clear instructions.  For me it must be proven all are on the same page before any task is undertaken.  I reckon it is a way to avoid disappointment, and at least if things do go wrong, I can wear it knowing I have done all in my power.
