Unity

I have been considering unity today.  I have no idea why, but something sparked my interest earlier.  I was really thinking about how much can be achieved with it and how much damage can be done when it is not present.
I see it a lot in politics.  A lack of unity seems the be the great thing that tries to be avoided.  It seems when a party is divided against itself all sorts of opposition can crowd into the crack.
It is not just evident in politics but in all walks of life.  Sport, work, home.  I have seen a lack of unity destroy.  I have also seen what can be achieved through unity.  A diverse group of people working to achieve the same aim.  Not all clones - but all committed to a single cause.
Man I reckon a lack of unity is the pits.  Person against person.  People taking sides.  The goal forgotten and personal differences to the fore.  One thinks they can do a better job than another, but I have seen the truth of the saying, “he who lives by the sword, dies by the sword.”  One no sooner gains the ascendancy then another is trying to take their place using the same methods they used to get there.
It’s funny, but I was thinking about our society.  There are a great many causes I espouse, yet I pick very carefully what I am involved in.  I am totally for the right to express an opinion, but I am totally against that right being expressed by hurting another or destroying property.
What hit me was the value of a common enemy.  Our society is split.  Labour/Liberal, Ford/ Holden Pro Abortion/Anti Abortion, Gay/Straight and the list goes on.  But guaranteed if our nation was threatened by another, we would all be along side each other fighting a common enemy.
It amazes me on social media how one person presents what they think is the argument to beat all arguments, but it is like it is was not even heard, as the person being talked to presents what they consider is the argument to beat arguments.
I consider that China is being disingenuous with the west in their dealings about Peng Shuai the Women Chinese tennis player who is number one in doubles.  I consider their dealings wrong.  Yet they consider them right.  If right and wrong are personal only then both are right.
I actually think we are doomed.  There is no reference point considered valid so there is no right or wrong.  There are considered to be many common enemies and not one common enemy in many guises.
That does not mean I think there is no hope.  There is, and I need to choose today which side I am on.
