Unexpected Roads

17/10/2022

It amazes me.  I live a fairly ordinary life.  Some of my hopes and aspirations are what most Australians long for.  A wife, a home, a vehicle to get around, friends, interests and holidaying in a nice place.  All fairly normal desires.
But what gets me is even in the every day I travel unexpected roads.
Like today I phoned a mate of mine we visit when we come up here.  We wondered if Thursday morning and having morning tea at his joint was a goer.  Turned out no.  He and his wife both have covid.  That was so unexpected.  We saw things happening one way and it has turned out another.
Merril went to Brisbane this morning.  It was unexpected.  Two days ago it was not on our minds.  Yet this morning it was happening.  That was so unexpected.
It was also unexpected that I find my lures.  The packaging makes a bold claim. “Guaranteed to catch fish.”  Ok I do not want to use it here because the lures are as big as some of the fish biting.  So we will go elsewhere and try it.  Finding it was unexpected.  Every time we come away we think, “oh we forgot the lures.”  This time I found them because I had packed stuff and did not know what was in there.  Low and behold there they were.
They are lures that need charging up.  They have a USB connection.  They must do something in the water, but we do not know what.  But we will follow the rules if they are “guaranteed to catch fish.”  I reckon I need that sort of guarantee.
The river has been flushed out so maybe there are some fish about now.  In fact I know there are as a guy was fishing in a place we could see from our veranda and he was reeling them in.  Mind you the guy next to him was catching nothing but this guy looked like he knew what he was doing.
The really good thing to me is every fish he caught he took a photo of and released it.  One photo he took on his phone was a reverse selfie with the fish between him and his face.  That was different but I don’t blame him.  That was the biggest Brim of the day.
Yesterday we did not expect every shop to be shut when we got there (even big food stores).  We came home again and made-up milk.  I finished a book I brought up.  I did not expect that or the effect it has had on me.  What it talked about I am thinking about a lot.  I did not expect to hear such good new music.  I did not expect to see someone pulling in fish.  That gives me hope for fishing – when I decide to move that is.
Some days unexpected roads are not travelled.  Things turn out as planned.  I know I need them.  As my brother just said today, he needed some r&r.  For me that is what this holiday is about.  R&r.  Unexpected in moderation please.
