Understanding

There is stuff I read that is like gobbledygook to me.  Some things I re-read a number of times and then understanding dawns.  It is a bit like the IT guy on the phone that identifies that the problem lies between the screen and the front of the chair.  It is not the program, but the user who has the problem.
I gotta admit these maths equations impress me big time.  They mean nothing to me, yet they can land a person on the moon.  I do well to add up a restaurant bill.  It seems just because I do not understand something, it is not invalid. I may use it, without understanding it.  If I had to understand everything before I used it there is not much I would use.  Understanding is not a pre-requisite to enjoying.
It seems so much is maths.  I have had a bit of a blind spot when it comes to maths.  But so much is built on it.  I’m into music.  Yet music it seems is maths.  Computers can write melodies.  It is not the same though.  To me, it is the human element that gives music it’s edge.  Any program or formula is a means to an end only.
I did hear someone say that any new technology seems to be magic.  Even if it is built on maths.  The mobile phone is like that for me.  I can talk, text, take photos, listen to music , to name a few.  It makes perfect sense based on mathematical formulas, but it does not stop me being blown away.
I found study more a user problem than a program problem.  I would look at stuff with my mind a blank. Yet after repeated attempts light would dawn.  It was not that the subject matter led nowhere, it was that my limited understanding led nowhere.  Eventually it led somewhere.  I do remember holding my head in my hands and just ploughing thorough.  After doing it a number of times there was a spark that eventually became a fire.
The trouble was, the more I knew, I realized the more I didn’t know.  That is both a blessing and a curse.  I would reach the top of one mountain only to realize as I crested it, that there was another mountain awaiting me.  It is a blessing to me though as it means the subject matter in inexhaustible.  I guess if it were not, it would become ho hum after a while.  No wonder someone said to me they were satisfied with an unsatisfied satisfaction.
I know in any job I have done, I would only be satisfied for a time before I needed a new challenge.  I did the one job for a lot of years.  What was satisfying to me was the changes it underwent.  It kept me interested.
There is heaps to learn.  Thankfully even enough to keep an old fella like me interested.  My lack of understanding does not invalidate what I may be trying to get my head around.  It may be the user is the problem.  I may not get something the first time, but give it enough time, and mostly light dawns.
