Unbelievable

Unbelievable.  First day of summer and here I am in a jumper.  It probably deserves using a word maybe never heard before.  Unprecedented.
I have been living in the Brisbane area for over 30 years and I do not remember this every happening before.  A few days ago it was really hot.  In the 30’s with a high humidity.  I was looking at the sky and it looked like it would never rain again.  The rest of the east coast of Australia was in flood but it seemed like that was a foreign concept here.  Though earlier in the year, areas of Brisbane had flooded badly too.
But our recent experience was warm and then cold, but it seemed to have settled.  Well it had for a few days anyway.  Then a storm heralded a change.  I heard it rain and was interested to know how much we had had.  It was 57 ml.  Way more than I expected.
Then the rain settled in.  Not torrential but soaking.  Enough to prevent outdoor activity.  And cold.  Ok not Artic cold but 20 degrees maximum is not expected at the end of November and the beginning of December.  20 degrees is more like the expected overnight minimum.  Not the maximum.
I just went and got my beanie.  Unprecedented.  There is that word again.
I am from Townsville.  I am used to heat.  Cool is almost a foreign concept.  Not any more though.  I thought I was now used to it.  When I first moved down here I thought it was so cold.  Over the years I thought, “that’s cool.”  Literally.  But each following year the cool seemed more and more tolerable.  Even enjoyable.
This year has been different though.  The cold had a bite to it I am not used to.  Then it would warm up and tease me that the cold was over.  But it would come back.  Winter cloths are appropriate even though it is summer.
The cold lasts just long enough to make me forget what the warmth is like.  I long for warmth and then I think I need to be careful what I want.
There has been enough weirdness in the weather of late for me to just expect the unexpected.
The rain has temporarily abated, and the electricity man has been and done something to the power.  All that remains for me is to wonder what tomorrow may bring.
