Un-Nice

9/6/2019

English can be such an inadequate language.   I say that and it can sound like I know what I am talking about.  However my aim is simple.  Convince the reader I do.
I have read many times “there is no equivalent word in English.”  I am thinking of words like nice, good, loving.  If I was measuring the strength of those words, nice would be green, good yellow and loving red.
But when it comes to words that are the opposite, I reckon bad could be yellow and hateful red.  It is nice I have a problem with.  What is the equivalent bad word?  I have none.  Until now.  I have a new word that is the opposite of nice.  It is un-nice.
I do not think you will find it in a dictionary but if enough of us start to use it, it would be begrudgingly added.  Sheer numbers could win the day.  One becomes two becomes four becomes eight and sixteen and so on.  Soon it would be billions.  The dictionary people would have to say that “un-nice” entered the English language in 2019.
Right now though, in a game of “NUMBERS AND LETTERS”, it would probably not be found by the dictionary people.  When presented with letters I would be asked how many letters is your word Peter?  I would say six.  When they came to me they would ask “what is your word?” and I would say un-nice.  Apart from the hyphen disqualifying me, the dictionary people would probably not find it.  Yet.
If asked to use it in a sentence I would say “that person is an un-nice person.”  They are not all bad and definitely not hateful, but there is something about them that is off.  I would know what I meant by un-nice.  Soon others would too.  When someone was asked “what do you mean by an un-nice person?” they would say that is a person who is not bad and definitely not hateful, but there is something about them that is not right that that I can’t put my finger on.
The French would say “Ils sont une personne non-gentille” while Icelandic people would say “Þau eru SÞ-fín manneskja”.  They would be saying “They are an un-nice person” and everyone would know what they meant.  I love the Translator on the computer.  I just type in “Translator” into my browser and then type a phrase in English.  I then have a drop down of which language I want.  For all I know that phase may say in French and Icelandic “your shed has an ungainly lean.”  It is a trust thing.
Soon it would be harder to keep the word un-nice out of the dictionary than to put it in.
Every journey starts with a single step.  I have a bit of work to do so I better get on with it.  It is an un-nice task, but I need to do it.
