Two Minutes

The chapter of the book I am reading (Atomic Habits) refers to the two minute rule.  It seems like good advice to me.
The author says choices are a fork in the road.  So much is determined by simple things at the start and can be the difference between a good and bad day.  For example, I may want to exercise.  He says to just start by changing into workout cloths.  That’s it.  The implication is that by starting easy and making that one step a habit, I am more likely to do what I want to do and stay below the point where it feels like work.
I must confess that is the way Merril and I have been.  We determined that we would pray together for three people each (or couples or groups).  We did that and it has grown.  Not because it felt an obligation but because we had made a start and just continued.  As the author says, “once you’ve started doing the right thing, it is much easier to continue doing it.”
I find doing something is better than doing nothing.  If I try to achieve something big straight away, I’m inclined not to do anything.  Many small steps get me to where I want to be.
I find the hardest part of any task is getting started.  Once a start is made, I am on the road to achieving what I would like to achieve.  The author calls starting habits “gateway habits” and says (rightly I have found) they naturally lead down a more productive path.
He refers to “decisive moments.”  They are only brief but have a huge impact in determining how a day turns out.  Even a bad choice can be changed to a good choice.
Sometimes I blow it and sometimes things work out.  Whatever the case, I know it is a journey and it is counter-productive to beat myself up.  As someone said some time, somewhere, “One Swallow does not a summer make.”  A win or a loss is only a part of the story.  I see myself as a winner.  A loss need only be something to learn from, rather than an ending.
