Tunnel Vision

I was reading about “Tunnel Vision” today and what the guy said rang a bell with me.
It is probably just me, but I see a difference between “tunnel vision” and “focus.”  Tunnel Vision I see as negative.  It is concentrating on one thing to the detriment of others, while focus is concentrating on one thing while acknowledging and doing what is necessary with other things.  That is what I mean here anyway.
It sure is harder since I retired, but I do know that work was my main focus when I was working.  I really felt that I had to do that well, but it was important I did not let it take over.  Work makes up the majority of the day but not all day.  I did like where I worked as I felt there was a good work/life balance.  Sometimes I would put in more than there were hours to do it, but I would always get that time back if I needed it for attending to matters of my own.
Still, beyond work there are family commitments and general everyday stuff that needs to be done.  What I really agreed with this person about was that we need a time away from what we feel is our main task to peruse a hobby or some other interest.
I guess that is easy for me as I have a number of hobbies.  Table tennis and stamp collecting are a couple.  The thing is they are things I really enjoy doing.  They are like an escape valve for me.  When I am doing them, I am totally involved and there is not a thought of what is my main task.  Certainly, I can learn from them and apply lessons learned but that is not why I do it.  I do it because I get satisfaction doing it.
Personally, I reckon that is healthy.  I need to look after me.  No one is helped if I go down.  I feel it is necessary for me to do stuff above and beyond what is my main task, for my own sanity.  Sir William Osler, a professor of medicine at John Hopkins University said, “no man is really happy or safe without a hobby, and it makes precious little difference what the outside interest may be…anything will do as long as he straddles a hobby and rides it hard.”  Charles Swindoll said “Diversions are as essential to our health and personal development as schools are to our education…”
I guess I am big on balance.  To me it does no one any good (particularly me) if what I say or do causes another to recoil knowing that there is “something wrong here.”  I want each thing I do to be part of the whole, and not all of the whole.
