Trust

I think it is that I am fairly easily led.  A song I was listening to contained the words “trust is all we have tonight, but trust will be forever.”  It got me thinking about trust.
I must admit I take the word of pollies with a grain of salt when it seems to be that obtaining office is what matters rather than fulfilling their word.  That is probably a bit of a cynical view and some do good things.  It is no wonder to me Spurgeon said, “A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.”
I was looking up the definitions of trust.  Multiple sources said basically the same thing, but one had a word I associate with trust.  Reliability.
For some “their word is their bond.”  For some, a handshake agreement is enough.  At this time it seems to be often an “elbow to elbow” touch agreement which does not seem to have the same impact.  Though the bottom line is “I said it so that settles it.”
It is understandable that all sorts of things are written to declare what was agreed to. That is necessary to ensure a person does not renege on their commitment.  It seems to be a case of “once bitten twice shy.”  It seems right to nut out the details in writing but the point for me is for some their word is their commitment.  Writing confirms rather than establishes.
I do not blame Shakespeare for saying “love all, trust a few, do wrong to no-one.”  Loving all and doing wrong to no-one is something that is right for ll.  Trusting few I reckon is something that is borne of experience.  Even the most trustworthy person can fail to fulfil their word when circumstances beyond their control intervene.
Yet for all that, it seems to me that trust is paramount to achievement. An exchange is made believing the other will fulfil their side of the agreement.   Maybe the written side of things ensure there will no room to get out of the agreement, but some agreements are one sided affairs.  The small print gives an escape clause.
I know I really cannot do much if the one I am trusting is unreliable.  If what I am depending on fails.  It is why I mostly have an alternative arrangement.  I guess I picked that up with auditing.  Believe the best but prepare for the worst.  Bad stuff can happen.
I do my best.  Others do their best.  But sometimes my or another’s best is less than what is needed.  But no matter.  Things get done.  I know some can be untrustworthy, but I know one that is not.
