Hmmmm.  Dictionary day again.  Today’s word (revealed by flipping the dictionary this way and that with my eyes closed) was “thread.”
One thing I really like about this process is the coming up with new words.  I mean if I was rigging this there is no way the word “thread” would get a look in.  But there it is.  Now my thinking has to go down a completely different track than I imagined.
This thread is not the threading the eye of a needle type.  It has its own section.  It is like “thread 2.”  No, this thread goes in many different directions.  Like in a thread being spun out filament of cotton, wax or silk etc, or “hanging on by a thread.”
Sorta like Queensland I reckon hanging on in the State of Origin.  One game all.  NSW played better last night, but if there is one thing I have seen in State of Origin it is that game three can be completely different.
There is “taking up the thread” which is proceeding after an interruption.  Or “threadbare” which is something very thin or in bad condition.  I normally hear about it in relation to carpets or items of clothing.  There is also a fish called “threadfin” which is a “silvery grey perciform fish of the family Polynemidae.”  I was going to say that.  NOT.  Who knew.  Not me anyway.
The thread that first came to mind when this word came up was “hanging on by a thread.”    I see a bit of it at the moment.  It seems to me some governments are hanging on to power by a thread.  Elections could go either way.  In cricket Australia was hanging on by a thread when they lost to Afghanistan.  Then they lost to India – end of story for them.
Some people it seems to me are hanging on by a thread with home loan repayments.  Others who were that way have lost and are now homeless and living in cars.  Or people can be in a relationship that hangs on by a thread and if it fails it can fail very badly.  Hanging on by a thread helped me realize that turning things around required something more than me alone.
Ok thread was different, but as always I find the words picked are interesting to explore.
