The way I want it to be

In the book I am reading at the moment something was said that reminded me of something Merril and I heard from a person we both liked a lot.
In a way it was a surprise, though in hindsight it should not necessarily have been.  She had been a cheer leader in the US.  Sometimes cheer leaders can have a reputation of being bimbo’s.  A bit like forwards in football really.  They have reputation of being all brawn and no brain yet for some (like this cheerleader) nothing could be further from the truth.
She has written a book which Merril purchased.  She said that to determine the desirability or otherwise of thoughts just add this. “And that’s just the way I want it to be.”  For example, I may think “the family is safe.”  I can add “and that’s just the way I want it to be” to that confidently.  Yet I may think, ‘I am depressed,” or worse yet, “I should kill myself.”  It seems to me very few would add “and that is just the way I want it to be,” to that.
She suggests that some thoughts will destroy us if we follow though and entertaining them increases the opportunity for that to happen.  She suggests nip it in the bud if it is not what you would like to see for yourself.  Destruction is not life.  I know I want to see a thought like that taken out of the equation.
I know my mind works weird but I was reminded of that when I read a guy saying that you can change one word to change everything.  He suggests we often say “I have to get up.” Or “I have to contact these people.”  Yet change “have” to “get” and the task becomes an opportunity rather than a chore.  “I get to get up” or “I get to contact these people.”
Much has to do with the way I see things.  I know I need all the help I can get but it is worth it as far as I am concerned.
He gave an illustration of a guy in a wheelchair and someone said something like “don’t you find it difficult being confined?”  He said something like, “I am not confined, I am liberated.  If I did not have my wheelchair I would be bed bound and not able to leave my house.”
It seems to me I so easily complain when something really is an opportunity rather than a chore.  I know I need to recognise something for what it is.  If I cannot say “and that’s just the way I want it,” then I need to do something about it.
