The Trouble With Anger

24/7/2020

Boy have I seen some angry people on tv lately.  I have seen them in the Black Lives Matter movement and the Environmental movement.  People who to me have a case yet seeing what they display makes me disinclined to join them.
I am very much inclined to think about the end of a matter.  It is the fruit that a particular methodology will produce that grabs my attention.  While I may be sympathetic to something, I will not share the anger.  Anger is more likely to dissuade me than make me want to join.
I guess that is not surprising.  I tend to avoid angry people.  I do not want to tread so carefully that I can hardly say a thing for fear of offending.  I need to be able to state what I think without fear of being harangued for it.  Mostly there is much we can agree on.  I want to get to that part.
There was much angst displayed over the looting displayed early in the Black Lives Matter marches.  I wonder on the role anger played.  There are definitely those with their own agenda who will hijack events, but is seems to me if the conditions are conducive then that is more likely to happen.  It is not the only reason, but I think it is one.
I cannot help think that like produces like.  So often we see that when a nation produces aggression the aggrieved nation responds in like kind.  This often leads to an escalation.  It is not necessarily a matter of right and wrong but of consequence.
There seems to be those that stir up strife.  Often it seems like a divide and conquer thing.  There is delight in binging disunity.  I can’t help but wonder when something begins in violence how can it end any other way?
I personally reckon it is better to be slow to get angry.  It can be really hard.  A saying I like is “beware the wrath of a patient man.”  Not displaying anger does not mean I believe something less passionately, but it seems to me controlled anger often means I live to fight another day.  Sometimes the best thing to do is walk away.  It may mean the difference between five minutes of fame or seeing the cause I am fighting for adopted.
There was a “Lewis” episode I watched the other day.  Lewis was ready to crucify his offsider but he was given great advice.  He ended up saying to his offsider “we make a good team.  I am the brains of course.”   I like that he said, “You are human.  We make mistakes.”
That is one of the reasons I am against algorithms alone determining decisions to do with humans.  Algorithms deal with ideals.  Humans are not ideal.  Sometimes the one for the job could be dismissed when a correct answer is not given, yet they are perfect for the role and are willing to grow into it.
Displays of anger that are a part of a person’s nature are doomed to failure.  There may be short term success, but the end result is not a good look.
