The Sum of the Parts

There is a saying that says “two are better than one.”
Boy is that the case as one gets older.  When I was younger I would take on anything alone.  A thousand pound rock needs to be shifted from here to there?”  “No worries.  I can do that.”
These days things tend to be different.  I may want to do something myself, but experience has taught me I am better to do it with someone.  What is the saying “a burden shared is a burden halved.”  The trouble is of course, that too long can be spent on how to do it, rather than just doing it.
I found this with wasps.  Wasps seem to love our place.  There are nests all over.  Some we don’t know about.  We had someone do some work for us and he discovered a wasps nest in a place we did not know there was one.  Another person sprayed and ran.  I can relate to that.
The wasps had taken up residence in trees in pots.  I wanted to move the pots.  I spent days deliberating on how it was to be done.  I ended up dealing with them and moving the pots.  I am sure moving took longer than it need have.  I would move the pots a few inches, and race away and look from a distance.  Eventually it happened.  Now I want to move another pot, and there are a multitude of wasps nests in it.
I feel I have a heap to give but I may not be as quick as I once was.  The good thing is, if someone else feels the same way, and wants to achieve the same end, we can do it together.  Often the sum of the parts is greater than the whole.  What is produced is frequently greater than it would have been, if just one person did it.
Having said that I am not the sort of person who jumps in.  If there are enough to do something then you won’t find me doing it.    I had someone say to me “it is a pity so and so was not here.”  Honestly, it did not matter to me, as long as there were enough to do what needed to be done.  Generally I appreciate those that are there, but do not morn for those who are not.  By the same token, if something needs doing, and I am the only one available, I will do it with all my might.
For a number of reasons I am not who I was (I was never good with heights so please do not ask me to climb a ladder.  Besides, my balance is shot.  We had a ball that ended up in our shed gutters.  It was not retrieved until someone for whom ladders and heights were not a problem, got it).
I can usually still do what needs to be done, but a little more time may be needed.  Besides, whatever the task, there are generally a number of ways to do it.
