The more things change

Talk about live and learn.  I had reason to look up the phrase “the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog” today.  I found out something that is probably known to many but was unknown to me.  That sentence is an example of an English language pangram.  One that contains every letter of the English alphabet.  It is used for touch tying practice.
I was looking that up as I read something today, I think is very valid.  A person (Marvin Ball) made the point that we often see something different in what we read, as we come at things from a different angle each time we read it.
Hence I thought about that sentence.  When I first read it, I may be right into colours.  The fact the fox is brown has me thinking about all sorts of different colours and may remind me of painting a wall, or buildings I have seen.  The next time I read it I may be into animals.  The fact a fox is mentioned along with a dog has me thinking about leopards, elephants and whales.  Then I could be into jumping.  I consider what may be my feeble efforts in comparison to world record holders.  I could think of long jumping, high jumping, and pole vaulting.  Down the track the word lazy may describe my state.  Although I may prefer not to go there, I could easily start thinking of how things were and how they are now, and what it would take to restore my enthusiasm.
I like that.  Like humans, language is not static.  While at all times I may remain human, I am a very different human today than I was ten years ago.  Not only have I aged but different experiences and insights have impacted me.
I know that when I was younger I thought I knew everything.  The older I get the more I realize that often things are not as cut and dried as they appear.  While a statement may be true, there is much to consider.  Often implications go beyond what has been by me a very narrow view.  The truth of a statement may stand, but it stands in the light of many aspects.
It is one of the reasons I am not phased by questions.  In fact, I welcome the valid ones.  I prefer to hold to something tested rather than something believed “just because” and with a closed mind.  I reckon that sort of thing makes me pliable rather than rigid.  Rigid breaks and while pliable may bend, it remains the same.
