The Egg

Click here toI admit, I laughed a lot.  We feed a family of Crows an egg.  There is mum, dad and baby.  Their Last name is Flynn.  Dad is Errol, mum is Eugenia and baby is Evie.
It is incredible how Errol uses his beak to break the egg open and then shares the refreshing meal with the family.  Baby is never quiet.  She is huge now, and eats a lot for herself, and still demands food from her parents.  They oblige.  We have been feeding them like this for a number of weeks.
I know I won’t get any points with a number of people, but I froze an egg.    I figure it is like having a frozen ice cream on a hot day.  We eat frozen meals.  Why shouldn’t birds?  I had it in the freezer several days, and decided today was a good day to put it on the lawn, and see what happened.
As per usual, Errol was watching when I put it out.  I no sooner disappeared inside, then he flew down to investigate.  For the first time ever I heard the impact of his beak on the egg as he tried to get inside it.  I reckon a jack hammer would have been better.  It did not stop him trying though.  After a while he figured that was not working.  That was when he decided to push it around with his head.  That did nothing but make him look a bit silly.  After that, it was time for “beak impact” again, but to very little avail.
I think he had managed to penetrate the shell as I saw him take a draft.  It was not the long, lingering draft as per normal, but a tiny little bit.  A taste really.
I rang Merril at this point, but I do not think I was much good for conversation, as I was laughing too much.  Merril suggested that next time he may anticipate the egg being hard, and penetrate so hard with his beak that he is left with egg on his face.  I wouldn’t worry though because it is not me.  It is a chance I am willing for him to take.
At that stage I think he decided another plan was in order, so he took the egg in his mouth to the birdbath that had no water in it.  It does have water in it often.  Rain is likely to fill it to overflowing.  It was a family affair by this time.
I could not see him at the bird bath without a good lean.  Soon I felt I needed a look.  When I went up there, the shell had been removed.  I must confess though, I have never seen a shell like it.  No wonder when I saw the bird, he was having a rest.  Just about all of the inside contents were there frozen as a one piece.
I wanted to see what transpired so I put the frozen bit back near where I had put it originally.  Errol and his family came together and did consume what was on offer.  I think though, the timeline for whatever he had planned for the day blew out as this took longer than anticipated.
If the crows ask, it was all Merrils fault.  I do not want to be around when they enact their plan.  The movie “The Birds” comes to mind.
I own up.  They say small things amuse small minds, and I was so amused at their antics.  Now, where is another egg I can freeze? edit.
