The Cover of Darkness

It is sort of hard to understand.  How can people not be as excited as I might be at four am in the morning?  I might have just had one of those “turn all the lights on and phone a friend moments, but my joy is not shared.  Sure, it may be later, but it is not normally at four am.
I found that out when I phoned someone when it was heading towards 10pm.  Their first words were “someone better be dead.”   I made a mental note not to phone at that hour again.  Good news should be shared right?  Seems not at four am. I have actually never tried to phone someone at that hour.  It needs to be 4.07 at least.  Actually it is 7am unless I am advised otherwise.
I feel I have had a light bulb moment, but it is one of those things not easy to write about.  Well I know I have had a light bulb moment as at four am it is dark, and I need to turn on a light to see.  Not long ago though it was not dark then.  It was light at about 3.50am.  You had to be there really.
I guess the light bulb fits thought.  Sometimes when I turn on the light a cockroach scurries to under the fridge or something.  Some of course would never see one.  But I occasionally do.  We spray and keep food wrapped and away, but cockroaches are survivors.  They reckon they would survive a nuclear holocaust.  My spray is not going to account for them all.
Recently we were at the “Cash for Cans” place.  A young girl started screaming like something really terrible had happened.  Turns out she had seen a cockroach.  Anyway they (cockroaches that is) prefer darkness rather than light.  They tend at that time to go about their activities undisturbed.
I was asking myself what is the difference between an activity that might be conducted in private, but is a very normal human one, and an activity conducted in private that is not right?
Robbing a house comes to mind.  It is often done under the cover of darkness.   It’s a good way of going about business undisturbed.  It does not need to be dark though.  What is consistent is the need to not be seen and to be undisturbed.  I do not hear it happening where an intruder goes into a place and the owner is sitting in the lounge and asks, “what are you doing?”  “Oh, I’m just robbing the place.”  “Ok but try not to make a mess.”
For me the test is really what if the lights suddenly came on?  Would my inclination be to scurry away?  Some things are better not seen but that does not make the activity wrong.  It is just it would be inappropriate.
If the activity I am involved in necessitates it being done in secret and is never seen as right, then it matters not if I do it in darkness or the light it is still never right.  Murder is never right.  I really hope that is not news to you.
It is like the rules of any sport, but I think of table tennis.  If I hit it long, I always loose the point.  But my technique may allow me to get away with some things within the rules.  Eventually though, the flaw is exposed. At that point I need to decide if I am going to change that or let it ride.  My choice.
