The Cover of Darkness

Things that go bump in the night.  I wonder why it was not considered right when I suggest someone else should investigate.
Recently I investigated a sound.  I am so not brave.  I turned a light on in what I considered was a strategic move.  I then stood waiting inside.  I believe it was a possum.  Relieved, I went back to bed.
I really feel I understand the saying “my heart was in my mouth.”  Unbeknown to me it was a cat.  In a previous house I heard a noise down stairs.  I needed to find out what was going on.  I went down, but it was completely dark and the noise continued.  I leapt for the light switch.  In that moment my heart seemed to rise up and be in my mouth.  I am sure my relief was palpable.
The thing for me is, the day is for work and doing things, and the night is for sleep.  Thankfully I have never had trouble sleeping.  Some people do.  A mate of mine was so tired one time, he fell out of his car when pulled over by the police.  Not a good look.  When I am asleep, I am totally unaware of my surroundings.  That is probably better than being awake and wondering about every noise.  It is one of the reasons I am glad the neighbours have dogs.  Let them stand guard, while I get my beauty sleep.
There are a couple of sayings that come to mind, that seem appropriate for the situation.  One is that “men love darkness rather than light,” and the other is “under the cover of darkness.”  The thing about darkness is, I cannot see and nor can most other folk.  Certainly, given time, my eyes adjust, but in every case my vision is limited to the best light available.  It is no wonder night time vision goggles were developed.
It is not strange that many things are done at night.  If the object is not to be seen, then darkness is a good cover.  I have been robbed twice that I know of.  I say that I know of, because if the thing is not important to me, I may not discover it, or may only do so some time later.  Under the cover of darkness, seems to be a good time for a thief to be out and about.
One time I was robbed under the cover of darkness.  I was staying with someone in Mackay.  I had my stuff with me including my dog (Sam).  He lived in the garage at night.  One night he went right off.  Bark, bark, bark (times many).  I did nothing. The next morning I discovered my good Kookaburra cricket bat was gone.  It made me think the thief was a kid.  I am sure there was other stuff in the shed that was way more valuable.  The only thing that went was the bat.
Some things just happen and nothing can be done to avoid it.  I try not to flaunt stuff - though if something is going to disappear, night time seems a perfect time to do it.
