The Big Thing Outside

I have a file called “sayings.”  If I read or hear something I like I write it down when I have the file handy.  Every now and then I read the things written, to be inspired.  I read something written and I can see why I wrote it down. “It is not how big the thing outside is, but how big the thing inside is.”
One of the reasons I like that is because I reckon fear is an outside job.  I am not given to fear. As I have said before, I tend to close my eyes when bad things are portrayed on tv.  For some that may be wimpish, but I am really glad I have done that as it means many images are not a part of me.  So when I am fearful without any obvious reason it is generally something that is without.  If I internalize it, it would be a different story
There are some fears that are right and proper though fear would probably better expressed as respect.  I won’t goad a snake to bite me. (I think I mention there is  red belly black under one of our Broms.  Someone asked me if I was still going to move the Brom.  I told him the area is now a wildlife reserve.)  I also would not go swimming where I knew there were crocodiles (at Daintree I was night fishing off a jetty and saw eyes come across the river.  I decided it was time to go home.)
I guess it is the old fight or flight.  They reckon pick your fights.  Somethings it is wiser to walk away from than confront when I can.
Some things though are unavoidable.  I get pleasantly surprised when I need to confront something.  Often I find it is not as big as it appears.  It seems to me one of the deceptive powers of fear is appearing bigger than it really is.
But big or small it may need to be dealt with.  That is when I find out how big the thing inside me is.
