Teeth

Today was dentist day.  I had made an online booking earlier in the week and they had rung to confirm the arrangement.
I am so glad people want to be dentists.  Not for me.  Being a patient is bad enough.  I do not think it is the domain of psychopaths but I never feel more vulnerable than conscious in the dentists chair.
I think I am over my trauma of the first dentist I remember.  I had had a tooth knocked out playing hockey.  Another was snapped.  The needles were bigger back then.  Took four to carry them.  Well maybe not but they were definitely more painful than they are today.  I got a plate with one tooth to replace the missing tooth.  But I loved to chew.  I chewed the tooth off.  I got a newy.  Chewed that off to.  So I gave it away.  All my teeth moved across and it would never be known there was once a tooth there.
The reason for my visit today was a sudden onset of pain in a tooth that had never been a problem.  Another tooth I knew was a problem and work had been done on it but I was told I would need a crown on it.  I was feeling hot and cold on it like never before so I expected to need to treat that one.  The other was a complete surprise until the pain manifested itself a few weeks ago..
But the news got worse.  The dentist said I may lose both teeth.  They could try to save them but there was no guarantee.  I was also informed that the tests they did showed other teeth needed work too.  In the dentists words, “there is other stuff going on there.”
I had been given anti-biotics at another dentist for the pain.  Apparently there was an infection.
I actually trust this dentist.  The one I went to recently was like leaning as he went.  Reminds me of when I had a hernia removed.  I said to the guy “you must do this all the time.”  He said “oh no I just googled it.”  He was very good though and he really had done heaps.
The only reason I went to a different dentist is the surgery is closer.  But I decided it is not worth it.
It was funny but Merril had problems with a tooth at the same time.  As she was going away she got my appointment and I got another script.
But it is time.  I do not want any unpleasant surprises while I am on holidays.  Oh and I found out one of my wisdom teeth needs a filling.  I will be glad when the work on the teeth is all over.
