Technophobic

Merril and I visited someone the other day who was really technophobic.  Certainly they would use technology, but were afraid to use new things in case they went wrong.  It seems things often go wrong for them, so they were content to use what they had (which was substantial) rather than embrace the new.
Personally I have seen this before and it never turns out well for the non adopter.  To me it is like trying to hold back the tide.
I have found that some people rail against the new, thinking their stand will be embraced by all.  The trouble for them is, that whether it be mobile phones or apps or whatever, it will go the way it will go, and we can either get on board or get left behind.
I know of one person who was shuffled sideways and ended up in a back corner in their job, because they refused to embrace the new. Others went ahead. They did not.
Personally I have always endeavoured to go with the flow in this.  I may be a slow learner, but I do get there in the end.  Thankfully I knew it was pointless objecting.  I may not like it, I may think that “back in my day” it was better, but it is not how things are now.
I found this out big time in hospital.  I felt that as a user I was on top of the game.  When I came out everything had gone to apps.  If I was to be a part of this new world, I had to embrace this change or be left behind.  I have chosen to embrace it, though I don’t necessarily like it.
It seems everything has a purpose or use, and something it is good for.  Devices will never take the place of actually talking to people, but they are very useful.  For example email means letter delivery is much quicker these days, the internet means everything is available to us in an instant, we can compare online, and other programs mean organizing things is so much easier.
Oh and Word means I don’t need to try and decipher my own writing.  Fair dinkum I had someone once say they liked my writing and I felt like getting their autograph as they were the first ever to say that.  Normally a person would probably be better trying to read my writing backwards through a mirror.
I don’t think I want to accept though, what I see a lot of these days.  People on mobiles totally disregarding their surroundings.  To me they are a danger to themselves and others.  To me there is a time and a place for everything, and the middle of the road is not the place to be looking down at a mobile.
Also, I am not condoning it, but I heard of a jogger being mugged when they were jogging with earphones on.  To me, the assailant took advantage of a blind spot in their hearing.  It is the unexpected that can get us.  We can plan for many things but unexpected is just that – unexpected.
So we can either embrace change and attempt to use it wisely, no matter how much we do not like it (if it does not compromise us), or we can be left behind.  It is our choice.
