We are told that many things are neither good or evil, and depends on who has it.  We see this in guns, GM foods, cloning and the digitising of our information.  Things change so fast these days that often writing the laws happens after the event.
The fact that something can be used for the wrong purposes will not stop me from potentially embracing it.
However it seems to me to be a fact of life that everything falls into the wrong hands at some point.  We have recently seen with Facebook the information we provided in good faith being stolen.  I think we have to acknowledge that no matter how well meaning the intensions and correct something may be at the time, it will inevitably fall into hands that use it to their own ends despite our wishes.
A big one today seems to be security.  Certainly we all want to feel safe to go about our normal routine, as there are those that mean us harm.  To combat this, governments everywhere are gaining access to our information.  It is all in the name of “keeping us safe.” In itself it is a worthy goal.  Unfortunately it can be used to track us down, and in the wrong hands, to bring us undone.
There is a program on TV that shows people trying to evade others armed with technology.  People get tracked down.  Our cars and phone’s have gps’s.  Visiting a teller tells where we are, as does purchasing something.
I heard someone recently say that privacy was becoming a human rights issue.  I knew someone who liked to sunbake in the all together.  They stopped doing it when told about Google satellites.  Drones are used to fly over farms to endeavour to accuse farmers of some wrongdoing.
Governments are trying to bring all our medical information together.  In itself it seems to me to be a worthy goal, but one day it could be used to disqualify us from something.  Rather than met the requirements of another human, we will fail to meet the criteria of an algorithm.
There is much I personally find convenient and embrace.  I will however draw the line at having an implant in the back of my hand or on my forehead.  To my mind we are heading that way.
Recently they advertised on tv something you can wear swimming that makes payments etc.  It is a great idea.  Unfortunately it can be misplaced or stolen.  With the amount of information that can now be stored on something very small, it seems the only foolproof way to have all your records stored in one place that you cannot lose, is through an implant.  It is already happening to find lost animals, and some nightclubs use an implant so patrons can access the venue.  Of themselves, they are great ideas.
It seems to me more and more, implants will be easy and convenient and make sense to have.  However my thinking is, that just because we can, does not mean we should.
