I am not an AFL man.  But really I will watch any competition.  NFL I find the hardest to follow.
I thought the AFL was a great game.  Merril and I bought dinner and went to Merril’s sisters place to watch.  I think though I was the only one who watched it without doing something else.  Merril and her sister were looking at clothes.  They looked at the screen when someone scored.  Me, I was riding each possession.
I can tell quality though.  Ablett did some things that helped me realize why he is so highly thought of.  I could see Dustin Martin’s qualities.  I said I thought he should get the player of the match.  Turned out he did – for the third final in a row.
It was good to have a win in that regard.  My record has not been good.  I wanted the Lions to win – they lost.  I wanted Gelong to win – they lost.  I want Penrith to win tonight.  At the time of reading it will be known who won.  Though the Broncos have won the woman’s NRL.
I thought it was interesting what was said about Richmond and Covid.  It was said that Covid did the team good.  The whole isolation and quarantine thing literally brought the team together.  Apparently, it could change the way training happens in the future.
I often think getting teams together is like herding cat.  It is said a champion team will always beat a team of champions.  I felt the Broncos were a team of champions this year.  They gave me the impression they were willing for others to step up.  At the start of the season they were considered potential Cup winners, yet they finished with the wooden spoon.
It can do them good though if they learn from it.  We need each other.  Richmond showed what a team can do.  They worked for each other.  Players stand out.  But no one can stand out without the input of others.
The full forward may be great, but the game cannot be won without the good work of the defensive players.  Merriam-Webster defines team as “a number of persons associated together in work or activity.”  To me the key to that is “a number of persons.”   Good football teams have both forwards and backs perform their jobs well.  Sometimes gelling together takes time.  When coached well though, teams that are more than a team in name only, must get better.
That can be an unwanted learning curve.  Superstars in a team can only thrive when others do their own job.
I love what another player said of Dusty Martin.  He makes us look good.  When we play together, we can make each other look good.
