Talking Worms

I figure if I need to do something that is more of a chore than a joy, than it is probably best I get something out of it.  Ok so maybe the whole meaning of life thing is not played out in the lawn, but there was something I picked up.
The birds that visit are the fly in fly out type so we can go away without needing to ask the neighbours to do anything.  Believe it or not, not so with the worms.  We have a worm farm.  Once a week they get a juicy yogurt tub (empty of yogurt I might add) full of vege peels and unused vegetables.  I also take the opportunity to look and see if I can find any veges in the fridge that have not made it to the pan and are no longer fit for human consumption.  If that is the case, then for sure they are perfect for worm consumption.
But if we are away more than a week we need to ask a neighbour to feed them.  The current situation when we are not away works pretty well.  The neighbour across the road brings scraps in a yogurt container and I feed the worms with it and return their yogurt tub clean along with a bag of cleaned tops.  It is from there the tops go to a place that sends them overseas and limbs are made of them on a 3D printer.
Anyway we got a bag of manure for the worms to eat while we are away.  That way the neighbour will not need to attend to them at all.  The farm needed to be cleaned out before we could do that.  It was while doing that I saw something that encouraged me on a house block level and an outlook level.
We have had weeds on the march at our place.  Bindies.  A mate who does not live far from me showed me his place and the same thing is happening.  That was a bit disconcerting for us at home.  Especially at our age.  We dream of correcting it but for the moment it remains a dream.
And the weeds were spreading.  But something else was spreading as well.  Good stuff.  Stuff we like.  Stuff that does not have bindi’s.  It seemed to happen so quickly.  One day I was contemplating how to deal with the bindi’s and in a few days I was clearing out the worm farm on the other creeping stuff.
It did get me thinking.  When difficulties seem to come flooding in, aid comes flooding in too.  Enough to encourage.  Enough to have me think this is a winnable battle.
Sort of reminded me of a song Merril found today that both of us really like.  She felt it was another birthday gift.  It talked of being in the trenches and all being seemingly lost and someone crawling into the trench to help us.
I love being encouraged.  Seeing despair give way to hope.
