Talk and Walk

15/8/2022

Stupidly busy day today.  I have four appointments.  Two down two to go.
I did find something said during the last one really got my attention.
I got together with friends of yesteryear.  People I used to work with.  One has a partner that comes along and Merril comes along too.  We have coffee, food and a chat.
The friend and their partner have a disabled child.  When I say child the child is around 40.  They have a rare disease.  By rare it is like there are four in the world, and the son is the oldest alive.
Anyway, as we are hearing on the news medication that was needed was unavailable.  One place that had some, involved a drive to the place but they said it would be provided.  But when the dad got there, he was told it would not be provided.  The upshot was the dad dug his heels in and said they were not leaving until they got some.  They got it only because he was so insistent.  It did not seem to matter that the medication was needed to function, and they should have gotten some already provided to them, but it had not been delivered but the government had paid for it.
While the dad was getting what was needed my friend was on the phone to the place that should have provided it.  It was this that got me thinking.  While they were on hold the message on the phone extolled the virtues of the company, and gave the impression of how caring they were.
What was highlighted to me was the difference between walking the walk and talking the talk.  In this case even the companies talking the talk was not a true reflection of walking the walk.  If they were doing the right thing their talk and walk would have aligned, but in this case it was total wishful thinking.
Their talk was all about saying the right things, but was not a reflection of reality.  It was designed only to get a person in.  What they were after was spoken of to indicated they would get what they were after.
It reminded me of something else I read about today and that was that something that should have been promoted was no longer being promoted as there had been so much negative press it was deemed to be not worth it.  The 10 second sound bites had shown something that was good for all abused to the extent that as one person put it, “they have thrown the baby out with the bathwater.”  The talk had been so off putting that the walk had been abandoned.
To me it is the difference between image and reality.  Maybe I am a bit of a cynic these days, but I do take many advertisements with a grain of salt.  I know that the way something is presented is what I may be after but so often the reality is different.  The walk does not match the talk.
In my life that is not what I want.  I want what I say to be believed as others see I walk the walk.  I blow it.  I do not always get it right.  But mistakes are built not on misleading but of ignorance.  I will do my darndest to have my talk and walk align.
