Talent

I am finding the latest chapter of Atomic Habits really interesting, but a little harder to wade through.  Something that I have read here though I like and have found to be true in practice.  It was a physician called Gabor mate that said, “genes can predispose but they don’t predetermine.”
That to me is a biggy.  It is so easy to think that because I am a natural at something, success is automatically guaranteed in that field.   Yet I know it is not.  Even when a particular ability is what is needed and comes naturally to me, I need to put in the hard yards to make it work.
I remember hearing someone say, “I am sick of talented people.”  What they were saying is the world is full of people with unfulfilled talent.  The key seems to be building on the talent and making it work when I feel like it and when I don’t.
It seems like a weird thing to say or think but I imagine the world would be a much better place to live if all who had to talent and even a desire to make a difference for the better in something, saw it through.
Unfortunately that is not the case.  I know for me I have passions in certain areas and abilities but making it work is a constant battle and struggle.  I have talked about it before but to me it is the difference between wishful thinking and making it happen.  To me it is great to have potential, but not so great to have unfulfilled potential.
There comes a time when I need to decide, “do I really want this and am I willing to pay the price to achieve it?”  To me on that hangs my future.  It does not matter if I am five or eighty five.    Making a start matters more than when I start.  Naturally the earlier the better but starting is way better than not starting at all.
I am unsure about posts in the next few days.  I am confident there will be one tomorrow, but I have an operation Friday.  Though it is a common procedure, it is recommended I rest for a few weeks after it. I do not see posting as a problem, but I do not know my future, I just know who holds my future.
