Taking Things for Granted

24/3/2018

CIt is amazing what we take for granted.
Previously if a light bulb needed changing, I would just change it.  Now it is a major operation, and often I will get someone else to do it if I can.
It really depends if I have something to hold on to.  If I do, I am up for it.  I changed a bulb the other day and was really pleased with myself.  The initial stool I used was too low so I used a chair.  Once my footing was ok, I detached the glass cover and replaced the light.
Unfortunately for us guys, it seems to somehow be tied up with our manhood.  I’m a bloke.  It’s what I do.  When you can do it, is not a problem.  It’s when you can’t do it, there is a problem. This is compounded by guy attitudes.  A girl at work said guys were good for reaching things that were high, and dealing with “yucky” things.
Although I think filing is my super power, I have never handled such limitations well.  To not be able to do something you once could is frustrating.  I am told though, that is what happens when someone gets old.  That is so far away for me I cannot relate.
I have never been fond of ladders, but they are useful as a means to an end.  I have actually heard too many stories.  A friend of mine fell off a ladder when clearing palms, and said he would never be up there again.  A guy I worked with told of someone he knew who fell off a ladder, and met his demise.  The trouble is, one can be right 1000 times and only needs to be wrong once.
I cannot deny I have a problem with heights.  I am the guy cowering against the wall when anyone confidently approaches an enclosed edge.  Even in sky scrapers with a wonderful view, I am hesitant to go to the window.  I am fond of admiring the view from afar.
I put an Elkhorn in our tree.  I was on a ladder.  I’d never now want to take it down.  We were dog sitting and the ball we were throwing to the dog, somehow ended up on our shed roof.  It stayed there till someone got it for us.
More recently I got someone else to put up solar lights in our home gutters.  They look great.  Of course they would want to, as they will be there till the place is torn down.
Things I once took for granted are not so easy any more.  That is life.  I like to concentrate on what I can do.  I know I am really good at staring meaningfully into the middle distance.  Oh, and sleeping.  That seems to be one of my strengths.lick here to edit.
