Switchfoot

Ok I admit it. I am a bit like a kid in a candy store. Goodness knows how I discovered it but the favourite band of Merril and I are playing in Brisbane at the end of January. Switchfoot are coming to town. Forget santa. This is bigger.
We have seen them play in Brisbane before. I wonder if they will bring the rain with them? In the lead singers (Jon Foreman) own words, they seem to bring the rain with them every time.
We can testify to that. We were due to see them in Toowoomba. The outdoor Amphitheatre was packed. Then the heavens opened. The rain was so torrential the concert had to be abandoned and what had been a dry creek bed was now a torrent of water.
Examining the BOM the cloud burst was just over Toowoomba.
Like me they would be getting fairly long in the tooth now. I do not think they take the stage with walkers yet though. Actually, I just looked up the age of John Foreman. He is only 46. In normal circumstances a walker is probably a long way off. Age has not stopped them producing great music. They were pretty excited a few years back as they had been asked to be the other band at a David Bowie concert.
All that has been sort of neither here nor there to us. We have just been listening to their albums as they came out. I used to digitally download them but now we subscribe to spotify I just listen to them as the albums come out.
There was a time where I had every album of theirs. One was not available online so I wrote away for it. I am so glad I did. Great album. “Nothing is Sound.”
A number of our Youtube clips feature their songs. They have sort of been the soundtrack of our lives. I know appreciation of music and artists is a very personal thing, but for us they are it. Most of their music is not first listen likeable but each listen to me causes me to like what is being said and the way it is being said more and more.
That said, I remember being away and an electrician needed to do some work in the place we were staying. We had Switchfoot playing, and he commented on how good the music was. Those songs were first time likeable.
I like music that tells it like it is in poetic words. Life is a balance of good and bad. Things I am excited about and things I would rather not go through. The best music to me tells of both. Alcohol, drugs, broken families are a part of life. So to is first love, good things happening and the everyday being ok.
I personally enjoy music that covers the spectrum of life and does not sugar-coat things. Yet I reckon nothing is wasted. Good or bad it fits into something bigger than me. Or as one of Switchfoot’s albums is called “Where the light shines through.”
