Suicide

It is such a heavy topic.  Suicide.  People have told me of four people that did it successfully, while I know two others that have tried.  I have done some research, but more is needed.
I was taken down this path because the news talked about Christine Morgan being appointed the PM’s national suicide prevention advisor.  I was shocked to learn that in Australia, 50 people are successful in doing it each week, while another 1,200 try.  Apparently, suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians between 15 and 44, and young Australians are more likely to take their own life than die in motor vehicle accidents.  75% of those that take their own life are men. Christine Morgan was chief executive of the National Mental Health Commission, and has been the director of the National Eating Disorders Collaboration.
I had never been there, but I visited the Black Dog Institute site.  It lists factors that may contribute to suicide - stressful life events, trauma, mental illness, physical illness, drug or alcohol abuse and poor living circumstances.  It then lists factors which help keep people from it - supportive social relationships, a sense of control, a sense of purpose, family harmony, effective help-seeking and positive connections to good health services. I though no wonder we are seeing an epidemic, when so much is breaking down.
In an interview Christine Morgan said she wants (and it is Scott Morrisons stated goal) the tolerance to be zero.  One is one too many.  All I could think was “good luck with that.”  The reason for my scepticism, I think she highlighted herself.
She said that she knows of two things that are big for young people today.  Anxiety and hopelessness.  These days we teach that self-worth is me only thing, and there is no future beyond what I see, no matter what I do.  That is not stated, but to me it is the logical conclusion of the thinking promoted.
I think someone on “You Can’t Ask That!” summed it up beautifully.  She said where she came from she had nothing but was never more spiritually alive, here she has all she needs, but has never been more spiritually dead.
So often the answer is seen to be to throw more money at something.  More money is always good, but I am yet to see it fix a human problem.  It does not mean we do not try, and there is much that is good being achieved, but solutions to human dilemma’s seem to have more to do with an individual’s response, than outside things.
So often it seems something is seen to solve 90% of a problem.  There is rightfully rejoicing at 90%.  90% is good, but it is people, not things, being dealt with.  One, is one too many.  It is one of the reasons I believe what I believe, and am involved in what I am.  I will never pretend that things are not complicated, but I have seen success, and I can only state what I have seen.  In some cases, with-holding is robbing.
I want suicide prevention to work.  People matter.  I do expect the scheme to meet with some success.  But it seems to me, preventing something does not automatically remove the problem that caused it in the first place.
Where-ever I go I take me.  It seems that no matter how much money or personal support is available, I need to decide for myself on the best way forward.  Making a decision, can open floodgates.
