Suborbital

I reckon I have had some doozies in my time but today’s word in the dictionary I think takes the cake.  The word was suborbital.  What I did not know is there are two meanings associated with that word.  One I had heard of and I think maybe quite a few have.  It concerns rockets or spacecraft that do not complete one obit of the earth.  The other I confess I did not know about.  It is “below the orbit of the eye.”
The Collins dictionary puts it this way.  Suborbital, in British English, ADJECTIVE, 1. (of a rocket, missile, etc) having a flight path that is less than one complete orbit of the earth or other celestial body 2.  Anatomy, situated beneath the orbit of the eye
The dictionary I got the word from ((The Australian Concise Oxford Dictionary) had them listed the other way around.  I confess it was early morning when my finger fell on the word and it took me a while to realize what I had landed on.
Before long it was like “wait a minute…”  I knew about suborbital with rockets etc. but that was the second part of the definition.  The first part was about the eye.  Not to be confused of course with the Supraorbital artery which is a branch of the ophthalmic artery.  Or so I read today.  I think it is a matter of just taking their word for it.  This branching into the unknown is a eyes wide open pace.  A place where suborbital has no visible impact.
I reckon there are things I need to know and some things I really do not need to know.  I think this is one of the latter.  I think maybe if I were a doctor or nurse I could nod my head sagely when reference was made to orbital or suborbital.  But to me it is a bit vague.  I would prefer it said “he has a problem with his knee” rather than “this looks like a suborbital problem.”
I mean that could be anywhere in or on the human body below the eyes.  A person would need to embark on a voyage of discovery to find the problem if it were not obvious.  That would be particularly bad when time mattered.
A problem with the throat is suborbital and time would be wasted if the diagnosis meant I should see an ear nose and throat specialist.  A toothache calls for a dentist and I reckon it is best to get straight to the point.
Suborbital it seems to me may be one of those words helpful in the medical profession but it is not something I have ever used in relation to the eye.  I am more likely to wonder about the skin cancers on the back of my hand or the white spot on my leg I don’t even know how got there.  I don’t immediately think “hmmm, I have a suborbital problem.”
Rockets or spacecraft not completing a full circuit of the earth I reckon I am more likely to hear about.
