Suasion

Merril chose the word from the dictionary, and it has turned out to be a pandora’s box.  The word is “suasion.”  The dictionary says, “as in persuasion as opposed to force.”  The Free Dictionary says, “the act of persuading (or attempting to persuade); communication intended to induce belief or action...”
I looked at a legal web site and it very much implied it was not as cut and dried as made out.  But the take on that site was similar “suasion is the deployment of rhetorical means for the sake of moving the audience to the rhetor's position. Persuasion is the effect or result of successful suasion on that audience.” “Persuasion is the process of convincing an opponent to change his or her beliefs and/or behavior through moral or logical argument (rather than force). When someone is persuaded to do something, they do it because they have come to believe it is the right thing or the best thing to do. They thus do it willingly, even gladly, not grudgingly, as they do when they are forced to do something against their will.”
That very much differed to one comment that said “My sense has always been that suasion is, through dialogue, attempting to convince you of my cause. Persuasion on the other hand has a bit of manipulation to it.” https://legalgears.com/2017/10/persuasion-or-suasion-there-is-a-difference/
I really do not know about all that.  I try to keep my head from hurting.
But my take on persuasion is that it does not contain an element of force except maybe the force of an idea.  But I do also think though “persuasion” can contain an element of force and even manipulation.  Though I would suggest persuasion is the wrong word.  Forced might be better.  Suasion to me is very much a motivation thing.  Suasion sometimes contains a threat or an implied threat designed to convince me to take the action encouraged.
But I know I am persuaded by logic.  I may comply to force but being persuaded to me implies being convinced and embracing what is proposed by my free will rather than being coerced.
It does not take much suasion for me to be persuaded of many things.  There are implications good and bad of actions.  I reckon it is in my best interest to be persuaded about a lot.
Suasion works on me if I am willing to be persuaded.  If my mind is closed no amount of suasion will convince me to think otherwise.  Even when logic is employed, and an argument makes sense, I may choose to hold to what I want to hold to.
This can be both a defence and a barrier.  Defences are good when confronted by things that may have the appearance of logic but are a fallacy.  But an unwillingness to be persuaded can also be a barrier if it keeps me from a beckoning freedom that is both logical and liberating.
Through suasion I am persuaded to end this here and now though.
