Strike while the Iron is hot

I wrote yesterday about us all having something to give.  How sometimes I need to dig to find it, but it is invariably there.
I really feel it is important we do that while we can.  To me there are a couple of elements at work in our society right now, that enable us to get along side and assist.  I do feel there is evidence that that is on the decline.
The element I feel needed most to assist those needing assistance is compassion.  Right now it can be seen in so many things.  The one time I went to the US I was in a bus that had taken a wrong lane.  At stop lights the person driving the car next to the bus driver let him go in front, to get into the correct turning lane.  I am thankful compassion is seen everywhere in everyday life.
But to me the seeds of its lack have been sown.  I heard someone say never has a generation been so connected yet so alone.  To me it is like a sinking ship.  Ships in such trouble always jettison first the cargo seen as least necessary.  The progression of what is jettisoned next depends on the severity of the storm or the problem the ship has.
Unfortunately, I feel that what will be jettisoned first (or close to it) is compassion.  It seems to me we are doing these things because we can.  No one will ever deny the rightness of doing so, but when push comes to shove the dollar speaks loudest.
I cannot remember if I mentioned a movie we watched recently about a meteor that was heading for earth.  Sensible ideas were to be gone with until someone presented an idea that could make money.  It was adopted and failed and the earth was wiped out.  I cannot help but feel sensible ideas will be ruled out in favour of agendas.
I will never forget in Schindler’s List (I think it was) the terrible treatment of the disabled.  There was terrible treatment of others in that, but the treatment of the disabled stood out to me.
So I think (and what I think is only relevant if it happens) we have a window of opportunity at the moment that is closing.  To me it is important to lock in changes now because the day is coming where such opportunities will no longer exist.
I know it sounds doom and gloom but a mechanic is not accused of just being a kill joy when they diagnose a fault that needs fixing or the vehicle is headed for trouble.  Much that is happening before our eyes indicates the vehicle is faulty and in urgent need of repairs.
