State of Origin Two

24/6/2018

I am posting late today as I am in mourning.  If you inhabit a different planet, you may not have heard that Queensland lost the State of Origin.  Although we are in drought, there is no dust here so I cannot throw dust in the air.  I could rend my garments, but I do not want to, as they are right, and I would get cold quickly.
We were up against it though.  What with that NSW grass tripping us up at crucial times.  Then there were the NSW lights blaring in our faces.  How were we expected to see?
I know I did not lose any sleep over it, as no sooner had my head hit the pillow and the next thing I remember it was morning.  Or should that be mourning.  When I awoke the memories came flooding back.  Unfortunately how I remember things does not change what has happened.  If it could, I would.
Surely it cannot be that they were just better than us on the day?  Sorry, I must be still asleep and dreaming.
It seems things ebb and flow.  We have enjoyed a golden era.  There was a time I wondered where Queensland’s next win was going to come from. We had prepared a dance and everything for when Queensland scored.  We did not dance much in those days.  We even produced tickets and had a corporate box.  Sure it was just a box around a seat. But the person in the corporate box was waited on the whole night.  Getting that seat was definitely worth it.  My boss and I used to have a coffee riding on the result.  I shouted him a lot back then.  Trouble is, that stopped, and then Thurston, Cronk, Smith and Slater and co. came along.  Arrr them were the days.
Of course it could happen again that Queensland enjoys a golden era.  Sorry… I was distracted by a flock of pigs flying across the sky.  Actually I reckon we will have another golden era.  Trouble is I think NSW will to.  I just don’t want that to be in my lifetime.
I am trying to be gracious.  I am happy for them.  One can tell by the sneer, I mean smile on my face.  I was more concerned about this series than I have been in a long time.  I was particularly concerned when I heard there were nine NSW country players representing NSW.  I do not know if it is right or not, but country players seem to be hungrier than their city cousins.  Of course living in the country in a drought can make folk hungrier.
To me though, it is just a pity that Queensland had to have a weaker team for NSW to be competitive.  I said that for the benefit of a NSW supporter who was watching with us.  Talk is cheap though.  The scoreboard showed they were in front.  Oh well, next game and next year the tables could turn.
