State

It was Merril’s turn to pick a random word from the dictionary.  When her finger points to a word we both gather round to see what it is.  Her finger fell on the word “state.”
It is actually a huge word (not in the number of letters – only 5) but it can have lots of different meanings.  Like as a noun it can be a nation state like China  or a territory of a country (like Queensland is a state of Australia).  It can have other meanings as a verb like to state something or another application I was unaware of in music.  Introducing a theme into a composition.
But the first and the one I am looking at is “the condition of something or someone at a specific time.”  This in itself was big to as reference was made to the “state of affairs,” the “state of things” and even declaring a “state of war.”
In all those cases though it seems to me to be “stating” the way things are.  I may not like being in a “state of war,” but denying it does not make it not exist.  It may be the way things are.
Merril and I were only discussing this the other day.  We both acknowledged that our present state is different now than it was a year ago.
It is one of the reasons I have difficulty with others trolling through what I have said and using a quote from 10 years ago.  Often, I will adhere still to what was said, but a lot can change.
As I said I know the way I see the world now is different to what it was.  Age in me has brought a mellowness.  As a youth I was more inclined to think I was expected to have an answer for everything.  Now I am more inclined to say “I don’t know” if I don’t know.  I will always state “but I will find out” at the end of it but the fact is I still may not know.
I am fond of saying “the way someone is, is not necessarily the way they will always be.”  My state changes.  While foundations may remain the same, I can be like a room and rearrange it and get rid of or add a few things.
My emotional state changes but I remain free to rearrange things.  Metaphorically I moved house a long time ago and moved into one who’s “bones” were good.  I have no desire to alter that.  But I do see a benefit sometimes in rearranging rooms.
